Bio
Darnell Brown has been telling stories since that time in 7th grade when he told his teachers he was sick and skipped an entire month of school. (Don’t ask) A native of Chester, Pennsylvania - Darnell’s seen his share of drive-bys and inner city violence, (His younger sister was shot mere hours after her high school graduation and thankfully survived) but refused to let that become his narrative. With a creative imagination, ambitious career goals and a sweet Kia Forte Koup, he packed his bags and headed to Los Angeles - towards an uncertain future.
After getting signed to a major management company, Darnell started pounding the pavement to jumpstart his TV writing career - all the while traveling the world working his day job as a Trained Assassin! Sike! Legal Videographer. For nearly five years, he traveled to places he thought a kid from Chester would never see: London, Paris, Finland, Madrid, Amsterdam…Jersey. That unique life and world experience influenced his writing tremendously.
Mental Health in the Black Community is a very important topic to Darnell. He worked as a mental health professional for several years in and around Chester County, Pennsylvania where he got a chance to see up close and personal how the demonization and silence surrounding any conversation about therapy or mental health in communities of color became the norm. But most importantly, he discovered men and women with mental health difficulties were not accurately portrayed on TV and film. Instead of depicting this thriving, diverse and multi-layered community with complexity and subtly, they are often boiled down to one note: their diagnosis - which is something Darnell attempts to change through his writing.
In 2018, he was one of 3 finalists (Out of over 2000 submissions) to win a TV writing contest sponsored by BET Networks and Issa Rae. (HBO’s “Insecure”) In 2019, he was chosen as an HBOAccess Writing Fellow (Out of 3500+ submissions) and was also selected as the 2019 Drama Writing Winner for Turner/WarnerMedia’s Writing contest during the American Black Film Festival.
Darnell was a WGA Writer’s Trainee for the BET series, “American Soul” and is currently a Story Editor for an upcoming HBO series.
